AD Period
1. 900AD - Hospital activity in India involved in treating diseases like piles,
jaundice, dropsy, TB, haemorrhage, etc. It was discovered in Tamil Nadu
(Tirumakku dal village).
2. 1000AD - The pattern of Charaka for treating diseases was followed by
all the medical works.
3. 1500 AD - Indian drugs and herbs influenced Europe.
4. 1563 - An article named "Cologuious dos stroples a drogus da indica"
describing various Indian herbs, was published by Garcia d aorta, a
Portuguese physician-cum-teacher.
5. 1664 - The first general hospital was established in Chennai.
6. 1835 - Madras Medical College (Chennai) was started.
Some of the historical points related to pharmacy education in India are:
1. 1824 - London Pharmacopoeia available in India in the form of Hindustani version. As
a result, the Indian community was forced to import drugs from overseas and Indian
pharmacy was pushed to an under-developed stage.
2. 1840 - The Goa Medical College was started at Panjim, Goa.
3. 1841 - WBO Shaugh Neesy (an Editor Prof.) published Bengal Dispensary and
Pharmacopoeia-Volume 1 in Calcutta.
4. 1843 - the Devnagri transcription of London Pharmacopoeia in Hindi and Bengali was
made available in India.
5. 1860 - 1st Pharmacy course started in Madras medical college
6. 1864 - Bengal Pharmacopoeia and General Conspectus of Medicinal plants (commonly
known as Bengal Pharmacopoeia) were published.
7. 1864 - For the publication of Indian Pharmacopoeia - 4th March, E.J Wang tabled the
motion.
8. 1868, First Pharmacopoeia of India was published in India under the British Monarchy
9. 1869 - "Vernacular Names of Indian Medicinal Plants and Herbs" were compiled by a
pharmacist in Chennai College and Hospital by Moder Sheriff. Later on, the
"Vernacular Names of Indian Medicinal Plants and Herbs" became the nucleus for
"Indian Pharmacopoeia".
10. 1874 - regular two years course for "Chemists and Druggists Diploma" was
started at MMC.
11. 1932 - Vice Chancellor of BHU, Late Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya included pharmaceutical
chemistry as a subject course at Banaras Hindu University (BHU).
12. 1935 – November, the first pharmaceutical society with an education platform was
developed under the banner of BHU Pharmaceutical Society which was a nucleus for
the All India Association-United Provinces Pharmaceutical Association (UPPA)
registered in December 1935. However, in 1936 the name UPPA was replaced with
Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA).
13. 1936 - Calcutta Medical College (Kolkata) was started
14. 1937-38 - Prof. M.L. Shroff (Father of Indian Pharmacy) started the regular
degree course of B. Pharm at BHU. The studies pharmaceutical chemistry.
pharmacognosy. and pharmaceutical economics were included in the course, except the
German Human physiology and pharmacology. Later on, these two subjects were included in the syllabus of BHU.
Post-independence Era
1. 1949 - Pharmacy Council of India
2. 1949 - Diploma in Pharmacy
3. 1953 - First Education Regulations (ER)
4. 1953 - Education Regulation of PCI stated Diploma of Pharmacy (D.
Pharm) as the minimum qualification to enter into the pharmacy
profession in India.
5. 1953 - Sheovihari Lal was the first PhD holder in Pharmacy who obtained
his Doctorate degree under the guidance of Dr. Achari, Department of
Pharmacology from University of Patna (Patna Medical College).
6. 1954 - The pay scales for pharmacists were recommended by Major
General S. L. Bhatia in the Pharmacy Enquiry Committee Report.
7. 1955 - The first edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
8. 1960 - AICTE gave the syllabus of Master of Pharmacy.
9. 1966 - Second edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
10. 1978 - Nayudamma Committee directed GATE examination for
M. Pharm courses with scholarship.
11. 1985 - Third edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
12. 1990 - B.V. Patel PERD Center (Pharmaceutics Education &
Research Development centre) was established at Ahmedabad
and the director was H. L. Bhalla
13. 1991 - National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and
Research (NIPER) was established at Mohali with Dr. C.L. Kaul as
the first Director.
14. 1996 - Fourth edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
15. 2007 - Fifth edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia was published.
16. 2008 - 10th May, Pharm. D regulations of the Pharmacy Act, 1948
were notified in the Indian Gazette with the objective to train the
future Indian pharmacists with skills of dispensing medicines and to
act as a counsellor of medicines focusing towards the patients and
prescriber of drugs.
